Setting goals has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I find the goal-setting process of visualizing an improved future and developing a game plan to execute extremely cathartic.

Perhaps my personality is such that the actual planning process provides a feeling of control in my life. In addition, looking towards the future with positive expectations creates a feeling of hope and positivity.

Jim Collins and Jerry I. Porras coined the term “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” when looking at companies that successfully articulated a compelling corporate vision, developed a specific plan of action, and successfully achieved the stated objectives.

I think the Big Hairy Audacious Goal concept applies to individuals as well.

The first audacious goal that I can remember setting for myself was: admission to the US Naval Academy. I remember dreaming and thinking about this possibility in 7th or 8th grade.

Following this dream, I developed a plan of actionable steps and executed consistently for years. This effort and a bit of good fortune resulted in my admission, and eventual graduation from my dream institution.

However, not all goals need to be audacious. Even more modest goals have value.

In the past, I have worked towards the following:

  • Get back in shape or get in better shape. (This one always seems to be on the list.)
  • Earn a specific promotion at work or hit a specific business metric.
  • Save a specific amount or achieve a net worth target…. i.e.  “ hit my number”.
  • Spend more time on personal reflection and meditation.
  • Be present and focus on my family when I am with them at home.

Some of these goals have been met along the way, and some were not. Some are still a work in progress.

However, I have found value in the process of visualizing, planning, and executing even if things didn’t turn out exactly as planned.

Going forward in 2022, I have tried to streamline my goal setting and reduce the volume of goals for myself and for this business.

My intention with this smaller list of goals is to increase the level of focus spent on each item.
